FPL’S NEW MANATEE VIEWING CENTER IS NOW OPEN
Manatee Viewing Center
The manatee viewing center at Florida Power and Light is now open and if opening day is any indication of how successful they are going to be with this center they have nothing to worry about. Opening day was very cold and still packed and the parking lot was full and overflowing. On cold winter days, the facility’s observation deck is the ideal spot to view manatee herds basking in the warm-water outflows from Florida Power & Light Company’s adjacent Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center.
The manatee viewing center is 16,000 square feet and cost $4.832 million. It’s located next to the Riviera Beach Power plant which is on the edge of West Palm Beach. Besides the multiple decks inside you can watch the manatee’s on live video feeds. They keep track of how many of the gentle giants are hanging around and there are many staff members to answer any questions you might have. The center is open from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m.
Admission is free and besides watching the manatee’s outside they have an educational center inside. It looks like there will be plenty of grass for picnic area’s. The facility has a multi-functional education center. The center also has an online cam to watch the manatees. This center is going to become a major destination for all of our visitors. The manatee’s are our snowbirds of the ocean. They come here every winter to enjoy the warm weather . The have been hanging out at the power plant since the 1940’s. Now Florida has approximately 6,300 manatee’s around the state.
