Micanopy & Island Grove
A great drive is on the Florida’s country road between Micanopy and Island Grove through Cross Creek. The movie “Doc Hollywood with Michael Fox was filmed in Micanopy or make it a Majorie Kinnan Rawlings day. If you are not familiar with Marjorie’s writings, several are “South Moon Under”, “The Yearling” which earned her the Pulitzer Prize in 1939, “Cross Creek” and others. Several of her books were made into movies…The Yearling & Cross Creek & Gal Young Un! You can take a tour of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm which is now a Historic State Park. Enjoy the trails and then have lunch at the Yearling Restaurant followed by a visit to her old house and on to Island Grove for a visit to her grave. Don’t leave any more pens and plastic deer; plenty there already. www.marjoriekinnanrawlings.org

Travel Florida’s Country Roads to Miami and The Coral Castle
If you had visited Coral Castle in the 1940s you would have been greeted enthusiastically by a man weighing a mere 100 pounds and standing just over 5 feet tall. He would have asked you for ten cents admission and introduced you to his fantasy world. It is documented that no one ever witnessed Ed’s labor in building his beloved Coral Castle, some have said he had supernatural powers. Ed would only say that he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids and if he could learn them, you could too. Put it on your “Florida Bucket List”!!!

Travel Florida’s Country Roads to Lake Wales & Spook Hills
Spook Hill is pretty famous in the Lake Wales area. The hill is near an elementary school, also named Spook Hill, and is famous because it is a gravity hill. A gravity hill is a place where the layout of the land creates an optical illusion and cars placed in neutral appear to roll up a hill. Read the cute sign, drive slowly to the white line in the road, stop, put your car in neutral and BE CAREFUL looking backwards as your car mysteriously rolls uphill and you try to keep your car in the middle of the road and not crash into another dumb tourist. This is a quirky thing to do in Florida. It’s just fun…so go have some!!
